What's Happening in Ms. Cheek's Class?

Week of January 31, 2000

Upcoming Events:

11/24-Student Holiday (teacher workday)

11/25-11/28-Thanksgiving Holiday

Thank you, Robin Isaf, for being our classroom helper last week. Robin helped me with organization and helped the kids work on their Saturday Evening Post articles.

Thanks to our chaperones at the Rockwell Exhibit at the High Museum, Carol Adams, Catherine Busse, Lou Isaf, and Joy Snell. We really appreciate your help on the field trip!

We had a wonderful time at The High Museum. We learned a lot about Norman Rockwell and it is amazing to see one of his originals close up. We also could not have asked for a more "Rockwellian day". As we were leaving the museum, we were able to watch the Veteran's Day Parade down Peachtree Street and see helicopters flying in formation! It was an added bonus to the already great trip!

News from the Subject Areas

Language Arts:

Reading: We will be working on research of the weather this week. Our goal is to get enough information to begin making a HyperStudio presentation on the weather.

We are focusing on reading non-fiction strategies. It is important for kids to be able to read and interpret material from real books because after graduation, 90% of what people read is non-fiction!

Remember to keep up with your reading logs. They are due on December 1st. (400 minutes =A)

Spelling: Sitton Spelling! Remember that all spelling assignments are due on Monday.

Vocabulary: Unit 9. Remember that the test will be on Friday

Paragraph: This week's paragraph is two-fold. First, students must pick a person to invite to Thanksgiving dinner and write a paragraph on why they chose that person. Second, they must invite that person to share Thanksgiving dinner. Both parts are due on Friday.

Math:

New math groups will begin on Wednesdday. The new unit will be division. It would be helpful to pull out the division flashcards or to check out the Math Baseball site.

Social Studies:

We will hopefully get into explorers this week.

Science:

We're working on the weather nad research. I am looking forward to seeing some great weather presentations from our experts!

Technology:

I will be away at Kennesaw State University tomorrow working on our web I am looking forward to posting kids' work.

I am sending home a permission form for you to sign if you agree to have your child's art on the web. I feel strongly about not including close-up pictures of students or their real names. I want to use the web to post kids' work and celebrate what they are able to do, but I would never put them in any kind of danger. Please send the form back if you agree to allow their work to be posted on the web.
